I'M AMERICAN (March 13, 2006)
By: Christa L. Titus
After nearly 20 years, Queensryche finally fires off the first shot to the
sequel to "Operation: Mindcrime," which arrives April 4. Frenetic lead single
"I'm American" touches on elements of the first record such as the authoritative
guitar intro and lyrics that criticize the country's lesser virtues, this time
kicking at the culture of entitlement. However, its modern sound shows the band
living in the present, displaying the strength of its veteran songwriters and
musicians. The stop-start bridge is a new twist in the group's oeuvre, but not
the incendiary guitars, which sear the air with speed and style. Queensryche has
not rocked this hard on a single in ages, and all five members' performances are
vigorous and inspired. The question is not whether this is a good song, but how
fans—with their high expectations—will react.
